Music of the 20th Century

Blues

Most modern music genres originated in America. The Blues led to all
genres of modern music as we know them. Unfortunately, little is known
about the origins of the blues, although the beginning of the blues era is
considered to be 1890. The blues are characterized by a repeating chordM
progression that mirrors the call and response format of the songs. The
blues were helped by the invention, redifining, and popularization of
instruments such as the modern guitar (invented in 1850), and the drum kit,
which allowed for smaller musical groups, as only one drummer was needed to provide the entire precussion. Finally, the upright Piano reached America. This allowed for many more people to own pianos, as they were cheaper and less bulky than the current grand piano. Notable Blues musicians include BB King, Eric Clapton, Ray Charles, and Ma Rainey aka The mother of blues.

This website is a work in progress. Further updates will include more information on the generes (and hopefully sub-genres) of music in the 20th Century.
